Five Days as a Temporary Local Between Cangshan and Erhai

When did you last simply sit still with your child and do nothing at all? Some places are made for families to wander slowly, and Dali is one of them. Cangshan doesn’t compete for height, Erhai doesn’t compete for depth — they simply are, and when the wind arrives it carries the scent of clouds, until doing nothing feels exactly right.

This journey has no checklist, only the natural rhythm between sunrise and sunset. Over five days we are not sightseers but temporary locals, tucked into the Yiyun Hotel with Cangshan at our back and Erhai before us — every window a framed painting.

Day 1: Arrive & Settle In

Land in Dali and transfer to the hotel with your private guide. In the afternoon, the pasture welcomes you — kids chase lambs across the grass while grown-ups sip tea in the shade. Dinner in the old town softly opens this slow journey.

Day 2: Pagodas & the Old Town

Morning brings the Three Pagodas, an electric cart lifting you to the top so you can stroll gently down — no effort, a thousand years of Bai heritage filling the eye. At noon you reach Xizhou, where the rice fields are impossibly green. After lunch in an old courtyard house, the kids dye a cloth — hands into the indigo vat, lifting out a blue no pigment can fake. While the cloth dries, settle into a café facing the rice fields and simply watch the green.

Day 3: Up the Mountain, Hunting Mushrooms

Follow a local guide into the mountain to forage — children search beneath the pine needles for hidden treasure, ferns and forest lore unfolding up close. Then descend to the tea garden below Cangshan, harvest your own leaves and press a tea cake dated today — every future brew will recall this Dali afternoon. Dinner is a wild mushroom hot pot, the day’s finds simmering in the broth, so fresh nobody bothers to talk.

Day 4: A Day on the Water

An eco-buggy glides along the Erhai eco-corridor — water on one side, fields on the other, egrets lifting off as the kids cry out. Lunch by the sea in Shuanglang, then an idle afternoon on Yuji Island watching the waves. Dinner comes at a hillside estate as Erhai unfolds below and the sunset gilds the water — the day’s perfect closing line.

Day 5: One More Time

Two easy choices for the morning: wander the North Gate market — woven bags, flower cakes, mushroom paste — then walk the stone lanes of Fengyangyi, the filming village of the beloved drama Meet Yourself, and press leaves into fabric at the botanical garden. Or, for high-energy kids, a thrilling Luge descent down the hillside. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for the evening flight home.
