Five Days in the Landscape That Feels

Yangshuo’s mountains are not mountains so much as 300-million-year-old stone pillars, and everywhere you look there is a view that could be a painting. This five-day slow journey asks nothing of you but to feel — float down the Li River to the very bend on the 20-yuan banknote, drift the quieter Yulong, ride a sidecar through the Ten-Mile Gallery, and paint a fan in an age-old workshop. Evenings belong to a river that becomes a stage and a fisherman’s lamp at dusk. Based for four nights at a converted sugar factory, you will leave with stories, not just souvenirs.

Day 1: Arrive & Slow Down

Land in Guilin and let a private car carry you through the countryside to Yangshuo — about 1.5 hours as the peaks begin to multiply outside the window. Check in at the Sugar House Hotel and let the first evening drift down the 1,400-year-old West Street: stone paths by day, a lantern-lit market by night, and a dinner of beer fish or stuffed tofu to begin.

Day 2: The Li River & an Ancient Town

The first full day goes to the classic Li River — a bamboo raft past Nine Horse Hill and the mirror-still Yellow Cloth Shoal, until the famous 20-yuan view appears before you. The afternoon slows into Xingping Ancient Town, where a master painter teaches you to mix ink and lay brush to silk — your own hand-painted fan. As darkness falls, Impression Liu Sanjie: twelve peaks for a backdrop, the river for a stage, and lights that make the whole landscape feel alive.

Day 3: Yulong River & Ruyi Peak

The Yulong River is calmer than the Li, its banks all rice fields and quiet villages, rafts splashing over little dams while you lean back and watch. After lunch a colorful sidecar carries you through the Ten-Mile Gallery — every bend a postcard. At golden hour a cable car lifts you to Ruyi Peak, where all of Yangshuo spreads below like bamboo shoots in a sea of green.

Day 4: Paradise, Tea & a Fisherman’s Song

Choose your own morning — boat through a cave tunnel into the hidden world of Peach Blossom Spring, or follow a guide into a cave of glowing stalactites. The afternoon is pure slowness: tea brewed by the Li River while you paint little landscapes on stones picked from the shore. At dusk a fisherman lights his lamp and cormorants settle on the raft — golden peaks behind him, a living painting in front of you.

Day 5: Farewell, Yangshuo

A leisurely breakfast, then time to wander the Sugar House — old workshops, staircases, and a pool full of quiet design. Your car waits to take you to Guilin airport or the rail station, about 1.5 hours away. The peaks will still be standing when you go; what changes is you.
