Eight Days Through Shanxi, the Weight of Time

Shanxi, cradled between the Taihang and Lüliang ranges, has carved an entire chronicle of Chinese architecture into wood and stone. From the spirit of the Northern Wei to the market towns of the Ming and Qing, from Yungang’s thousand-year smile to Pingyao’s grey-brick walls — the mountains carry meaning, the buildings stay silent, and they have waited a thousand years for this one meeting with you.

Day 1: First Look at Datong

Land in Datong, and a private car and guide meet you at the airport. A serving of century-old Fenglinge flower shaomai welcomes you — skins thin as paper, shaped like blossoms, one bite full of the taste of Datong.

Day 2: A Dynasty in Stone & Liao-Jin Grandeur

Inside the Yungang Grottoes, a specialist decodes the centuries: which Buddha hides the Northern Wei emperor’s “selfie,” which cave guards a Grecian strongman. Then on to the “Venus of the East” — the smiling, teeth-showing Bodhisattva of Huayan Temple — the Liao-dynasty timber of Shanhua Temple, and China’s largest Nine-Dragon Screen. A thousand years of Liao-Jin art in a single day.

Day 3: Pagoda Wonder & a Feast by Torchlight

Gaze up at the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, the world’s tallest and oldest all-timber tower — not a single nail, only interlocking mortise-and-tenon brackets, the ultimate “dark tech” of ancient master builders. After dark, Daiwangfu glows with lanterns as the intangible-heritage “Datihua” hurls molten iron into a sky-burst of ten thousand golden sparks.

Day 4: A Miracle on the Cliff & the Ancient Town

Admire the full panorama of the Hanging Temple from below — Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism in a gravity-defying “crossover.” Then uncover the Yuan-dynasty murals of Yong’an Temple in Hunyuan, eight hundred vivid figures strong. Afternoon, onward to the Buddhist realm of Mount Wutai.

Day 5: Pilgrimage to Mount Wutai

Pay respects at the incense-rich Wuye Temple, the “Little Potala” of Pusading, the oldest Xiantong Temple and Shuxiang Temple — ancestral home of Manjusri. Climb the 108 steps said to dissolve 108 worries, then head south toward Pingyao.

Day 6: Time-Travel in Pingyao

Roll through a 2,700-year-old walled city by sightseeing car, play “virtual boss” at the Rishengchang ticket office, and climb the city wall to survey it all — as if you’ve become a Shanxi merchant prince. After dark, step into Encore Pingyao — not to sit, but to walk with the actors “back” into the late Qing and live a stirring tale of blood and heritage.

Day 7: Merchant Mansions & Taiyuan Flavor

Explore the Qiao Family Courtyard — setting of “Raise the Red Lantern” — and its castle-like, ornately carved Shanxi merchant grandeur; then seek the real-world “Black Myth: Wukong” shrine and thousand-year-old dragon at Jinci Temple. By night, Liuxiang Food Street serves knife-cut noodles, mutton offal and hearty local classics — eat your fill.

Day 8: Farewell Shanxi

After breakfast, check out and let the private car take you to Taiyuan Airport. Eight days through the three lands of Shanxi, always southward — every timber frame and every cliff face has pressed the weight of time into your memory.

What’s Included

A private car and guide for all eight days, tickets to the Yungang Grottoes, Huayan, Shanhua, the Nine-Dragon Screen, Yingxian Pagoda, Hanging Temple, Mount Wutai, Pingyao, Qiao Family Courtyard and Jinci, your seats for “Encore Pingyao,” seven nights in hand-picked hotels and daily breakfast, plus every transfer including Datong pickup and Taiyuan drop-off. Frequently Asked Questions

Why view the Hanging Temple from below instead of climbing it?

Climbing usually means long queues and cramped interior spaces, and it can be tough for those afraid of heights. The mountain-base viewpoint reveals the full drama of the cliff-hung temple and frees time for deeper experiences.

Is Mount Wutai cold?

Known as the 'Cool Mountain', Mount Wutai stays chilly even in summer mornings and evenings — bring warm layers, and we'll advise on dressing by season.

Is it suitable for older travelers?

Yes — private transfers and a relaxed pace throughout, with guided viewing at Yungang and Pingyao and no wasted backtracking. Some walking is involved, so comfortable shoes and an adjustable pace are recommended.

What is 'Encore Pingyao' like?

It's a walking immersive drama — you follow the actors through a recreated late-Qing Pingyao and live a story of family and heritage, an intensely moving, full-sensory experience.
